Bernie And Hillary Disagree Over Soda Tax

PHILADELPHIA -- Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are butting heads over a hefty soda tax proposed in Philadelphia. Mayor Jim Kenny last month proposed a 3¢-per-fl.oz. tax on sugary drinks, which would add 36¢ to the price of a can of soda.

Clinton endorsed the democratic mayor's tax proposal as a way to reduce childhood obesity and fund universal pre-school. Clinton was the first candidate this election season to endorse a soda tax, viewing it as a way to subsidize programs.

But Sanders says the tax is regressive and would disproportionately impact the poor, since low-income families tend to drink more soda. He slammed Clinton for supporting the tax after she pledged not to raise taxes on anyone making less than $250,000.

It may not be the most pressing area of disagreement between the two candidates, but it is one that may reverberate across the country as more cities and states use the tax to raise revenue or improve citizens' health.
