TOKYO -- So, this is different. Starting in July, bulk vending enthusiasts in Japan will be able to make their purchases online. Bandai Co. Ltd. has partnered with the game developer Netch Co. to test the new vending concept. Consumers can download an app to their home computers or mobile devices that will allow them to purchase and remotely activate a capsule vender. A camera positioned near the vending machine allows them to view their purchases online, which is then shipped to their homes. Called the Net de Capsule, each vend is estimated to cost from ¥200 ($1.62) to ¥600 ($4.86).

The concept is not as far-fetched as it may sound. A few years ago, Netch rolled out a similar concept for skill cranes that enabled users to remotely operate the devices online. Players controlled the claw from their phones; prizes were shipped to the patrons' homes.

Applying the concept to bulk vending could open up a niche for vendable products. It could also spur development of technology that would allow consumers to interact with vending machines in new ways -- even when they are closer than a remote warehouse.
