Sydney, Australia's Inner West Council has extended and expanded its initiative to provide free feminine hygiene products in public bathrooms, according to a 9 News report.
The council launched the initiative last year to address period poverty by installing tampon and sanitary pad dispensing machines at 10 community sites. Because the trial initiative was such a success, the council decided to move forward with the program for the 2024-25 fiscal year.
"The Inner West community has always been at the forefront of movements toward equality and providing free period products is one more step in the long journey towards equality for women," Inner West Councillor Philippa Scott told the news outlet. "By continuing this program, we are taking significant steps toward ending period poverty and ensuring that everyone has access to essential hygiene products that are no more a luxury item than running water, soap and toilet paper."
