Amazon Pharmacy will begin installing prescription pickup kiosks inside select One Medical clinics across the Los Angeles area in December, expanding its efforts to make medication access faster and more convenient for patients.

The kiosks will allow patients to fill prescriptions immediately after an appointment. After a doctor sends an e-prescription to Amazon Pharmacy, patients can choose kiosk pickup in the Amazon app, pay in-app, receive a QR code and scan it at the kiosk to retrieve their medication. Licensed pharmacists will be available by video or phone for consultation.

The machines will stock a limited selection of common medications such as antibiotics, inhalers and blood pressure drugs based on each clinic's prescribing patterns. They will not dispense controlled substances or refrigerated medicines.

Amazon said the goal is to reduce delays in starting treatment and improve adherence by eliminating the need for a separate pharmacy trip. The first kiosks will appear in One Medical locations in Downtown Los Angeles, West Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Long Beach and West Hollywood, with additional sites planned.

The company has not disclosed when the program will expand beyond the Los Angeles area.
