DALLAS -- A court in Texas has handed down a 45-year sentence to a convicted ATM thief. According to local news reports, Michael Morgan, 32, was convicted in June of engaging in organized criminal activity by breaking into an ATM located in a CVS store one year ago. Morgan has an extensive criminal record that includes two felony convictions.

The ATM break-in, authorities said, was consistent with a rash of similar robberies that plagued the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex throughout 2015. Whether law enforcement officials suspected Morgan and his crew, which is reported to have up to five members, of perpetrating those robberies is not clear.

However, Morgan's sentence, critics say, outstrips many of those handed down for murder and other violent acts. The nearly half-century sentence may be the longest for an ATM theft in U.S. history.
