CHARLOTTE, NC -- Snyder's-Lance Inc. said it will close a plant and cut 250 jobs from its global workforce as the first step in a plan to streamline its structure and lower costs.

The snack giant said it was laying off the 250 employees by Aug. 5 and expects to close its plant in Perry, FL, by the end of September to "more effectively utilize the capacity of its remaining chips plants and reallocate resources to support the company's growth objectives."

As part of its reorganization, Snyder's-Lance has appointed John Maples chief customer officer. He was previously president of the company's direct sales division. In addition, Frank Schuster, currently president of Snyder's-Lance's DSD division, will become president of sales execution and will continue to lead the snack-maker's national distribution network and in-store execution.

Snyder's-Lance president and chief executive Brian Driscoll said the firm's workforce reduction and plant closure "is a required first step to improve our financial performance, balancing costs and expected levels of profitability in a very competitive environment." He said the company will provide a comprehensive overview of its multiyear transformation plan when it reports its second-quarter financial results on Aug. 8.
