CLOVER, SC -- The York County Sheriff's Department is searching for a would-be thief who used a stolen backhoe in an attempt to break into a bank ATM. According to local police reports, the thief obtained the backhoe from a nearby construction site in the early morning hours of Jan. 4, and then drove it across a highway in the Clover Lake Wylie, SC, area.
Law enforcement officials noted that the attempted theft was similar to another incident in Bessemer City, NC, a few days prior. Heavy construction equipment has also been used in ATM robberies in Great Britain over the past year.
