NEWARK, NJ -- Law enforcement officials in New Jersey have ended an ATM crime spree dating back to November 2014 that reportedly involved the "crash and grab" thefts of 19 machines. Levell Burnett, 38, and Mark Smith, 32, both of Newark, were arrested and charged with the crimes.

"It has been extremely difficult on local businesses as a result of the damage caused by criminals' thefts of ATMs," said Newark police director Eugene Venable. "The taskforce had a daunting task before them in attempting to catch the actors involved."

The pair allegedly used a variety of vehicles to smash through glass doors to steal ATMs from liquor stores, family restaurants, laudromats and dry cleaning establishments, among other businesses, throughout Essex County.

The arrests were made by officials from the New Jersey State Police, Newark Police Department, Essex County Prosecutor's office and the FBI.

Held on $150,000 bail, the pair is charged with multiple counts of theft, conspiracy to commit burglary and criminal mischief.
