McLEAN, VA -- Mars Inc. said it will phase out artificial colors from its chocolate, gum, confection and food products over the next five years. The candy giant said it will work closely with its suppliers to find alternatives that not only meet its strict quality and safety standards, but also maintain the vibrant, fun colors consumers have come to expect from the company's beloved brands.

"Eliminating all artificial colors from our human food portfolio is a massive undertaking, and one that will take time and hard work to accomplish," said Mars president and chief executive Grant F. Reid. "Our consumers are the boss and we hear them. If it's the right thing to do for them, it's the right thing to do for Mars."

Mars currently uses a variety of naturally sourced and artificial colors in its global product portfolio. Depending on consumer preferences, ingredient availability and local regulations, slightly different formulations and products may exist in different markets. However, all are manufactured in compliance with Mars' own internal quality and safety requirements and the requirements established by food safety regulators globally, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Food Safety Authority.

The company estimates that the process of developing alternative colors, ensuring their safety and quality, obtaining regulatory approval and introducing the ingredients across its 50-brand portfolio around the world will take about five years.
