Jersey Police Nab Thief In ATM Bag Theft

MAHWAH, NJ -- Finders aren't always keepers. Police report that they have apprehended one of the two men who made off with a bag left behind by ATM route personnel. According to local reports, Mahwah, NJ, police have arrested 42-year-old Alton Harvey of Hillside, NJ, for the theft of the bag containing an estimated $150,000.

The bag, which was accidentally left behind at a location by route personnel while servicing an independent ATM in a Mahwah, NJ, industrial park, gained widespread coverage in the news media.

Harvey was charged with theft of mislaid property and is being held at the Bergen County Jail on $125,000 bail. Authorities are still searching for Harvey's accomplice, 35-year-old Jamar Bludson of Newark, NJ.

According to statements released by law enforcement, Harvey and Bludson were driving a GMC van looking for discarded tires for resale when they came across the bag. It was images of the van caught on surveillance video that provided their primary lead in the case. When police finally caught up with Harvey, they discovered a new Chevrolet Tahoe SUV with an estimated sticker price of $46,000 that had been registered in his name just hours after the theft.
