AMSTERDAM -- A Dutch tech firm is taking a futuristic approach to office coffee service. A Lab has programmed a drone to serve specialty drinks to employees on different floors within its building.

By using an integrated smartphone app, A Lab employees can order coffee without leaving their desks or conference room. The app sends each order to the company's café on the ground floor, where baristas prepare the drink and place the cup in the Coffee Copter.

The drone reportedly works with a stabilizer to keep the coffee as straight as possible during flight. It also uses object recognition and movement detection to avoid people and structures. It is programmed with a 3D algorithm to fly routes through the building and land at the delivery address on its specially designed deskside landing pillar. The app sends a message to the recipient that his or her coffee has arrived.

A Lab said it is further developing the drone for the commercial market and seeking investors.
