Attempted ATM Robbery Leaves One Killed Another Seriously Injured

RIGA, Latvia -- An ATM robbery turned out disastrously for two thieves in the Baltic state of Latvia.

On Dec. 1, the duo attempted to fill an ATM with natural gas, and then set off an explosion by remote control. However, the ATM, located in Bolderaja, a suburb of the capital city of Riga, exploded just a little too soon. One of the would-be thieves was killed in the blast and the other left in critical condition.

According to local media, the inept thieves drilled a hole in the machine and attempted to fill it with gas from a portable cylinder. But the gas, along with the cylinder, exploded before they could retreat to a safe distance.

The blast, which was initially thought to be an act of terrorism, was later revealed as simply criminal stupidity.
