ATM Thefts Surge In Dallas-Fort Worth

DALLAS -- The Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex is shaping up to become the ATM theft capital of America. The dubious title is being hard-won after numerous ATM thefts that took place in the area during 2015. According to local reports, thefts have included everything from smash-and-grabs, in which thieves usually ram a stolen vehicle through a store window or wall, to simply dragging machines out of locations.

So far this year, Dallas-Fort Worth saw nearly 100 thefts or attempted thefts of ATMs. Among the most popular targets for the thieves are convenience stores, gas stations, restaurants, hotels and pharmacies. In one brazen attempt, thieves tried to steal a machine from the lobby of a hotel located across the street from Dallas police headquarters on South Lamar St.

Local law enforcement officials say the recent surge in thefts may be the work of 20 to 40 people operating in three to six organized groups.

Dallas is not alone in the marked increase in ATM thefts. The uptick in ATM robberies has grown to become a global phenomenon. In many cases, the thieves appear to be well organized, knowing when the units will hold the maximum amount of cash.
