RIO de JANEIRO, Brazil -- Athletes from around the world participating in the XXXI Summer Olympic games here also have the chance to compete on a new arcade game, developed by Sega in cooperation with Nintendo Co. Ltd., and licensed exclusively by International Sports Multimedia Ltd. (Atlanta), the exclusive worldwide licensee of the International Olympic Committee for interactive entertainment software.

The game -- Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Arcade Edition -- has a long pedigree: it's the latest installment in the Mario & Sonic franchise. A home version of the game already has been released by Nintendo for its 3DS and Wii U systems.

Produced in two- and four-player versions, Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games features a vertical 55" high-definition video monitor displaying an Olympic stadium in which players can select from a cast of legendary characters including Luigi, Knuckles, Peach and Tails. They then compete in nine Olympic events, including a 100-meter race, a hammer throw and archery.

The game is fitted with twin joystick and foot sensor controls. The four-player model is topped by an eye-catching marquee with built-in "player cam."

A number of the new "arcade edition" games are installed in the Olympic Village in Rio's Barra district, the principal venue of the Games. In this central location, the games will be played by athletes and volunteer-staff from all over the world during the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic games.

"Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Arcade Edition was a game I saw in Japan long before it was even considered to be released in Western markets," said Kevin Bachus, senior vice-president, entertainment and games strategy for Dave & Buster's Inc. (Dallas). "I'm incredibly pleased with the job Sega did in getting this game ready for our market."

Bachus reported that the piece has been warmly received by Dave & Buster's guests, and is a top-earning game. "As a consequence, Mario and Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Arcade Edition is now in every Dave and Buster's location and will be a staple addition to all our new venues for the foreseeable future," he concluded.

A video mix that illustrates gameplay can be found at International Sports Multimedia's website: ismltd.com.
