Chuck E. Cheese's To Replace Tokens With Semnox's RFID Cashless System

Self-service kiosks and tap-to-play cards improve guest experiences

IRVING, TX -- Chuck E. Cheese's is hoping to replace the tokens used to activate its arcade games with a cashless payment system at all its stores. It reportedly is using Semnox Solutions' radio frequency identification (RFID) system for the job. As of late August, wireless payment and tracking systems have been installed at 100 of the pizza-arcade locations nationwide. CEC Entertainment, the chain's parent company based here, operates about 600 venues, most of them in the United States.

Chuck E Cheese's is using Semnox's new Edge reader, which boasts a sleek flat design, 3.5" color display, LEDs and audio to indicate transaction status. Edge readers can be programmed for time-of-day gameplay and promotions. For example, Chuck E. Cheese's current "half-price Tuesday" is automatically implemented every Tuesday. The system's wireless readers invite guests to tap their cards on readers to activate games. Tap-to-play eliminates possible confusion of multiple card swipes.

According to Semnox, customers will come to prefer the cashless system to traditional tokens. "The card system has provided Chuck E. Cheese's customers with an enhanced experience that is clean, easy to use and gives parents new functionality," the company said. "With the new ability to register play cards, parents can keep track of their point totals and recover the points if the cards are lost."

A Semnox installation includes a self-service kiosk with 22" touchscreen that Chuck E. Cheese's store managers can customize. The bilingual kiosks can accept currency, tokens and credit cards, and issue new cards or recharge existing ones. Authorized personnel can load credits or view real-time reports in the store management console.

Chuck E. Cheese's stores will also be linked to Semnox's cloud-based network, allowing for centralized corporate management of all store operations and business analytics. Its card-roaming feature lets customers use a single card at multiple locations, too.

"With Semnox's cashless system in place, we are now able to increase customer satisfaction and develop a more efficient process," said CEC Entertainment chief executive Tom Leverton. "With the online business intelligence and analytical reports [available] through Semnox's Cloud-based offering, we get a better understanding of our customers' spending habits and are able to make informed decisions quickly and accurately."
