TouchTunes And Sound Leisure To Bring Playdium Smart Jukebox To UK Market

LONDON -- In-venue entertainment giant TouchTunes announced today that it has partnered with Sound Leisure to begin marketing its Playdium digital jukebox line in the United Kingdom. Under the terms of the agreement, Leeds-based Sound Leisure, the UK's leading commercial jukebox factory, will import and sell Playdiums, and provide aftersales support.

The agreement strengthens an existing relationship between the two jukebox companies. In June 2014, New York City-based TouchTunes, which administers the largest jukebox network in North America, acquired Soundnet, a provider of audio and video content to jukeboxes. Soundnet, before and after the acquisition, has been the exclusive digital music source for Sound Leisure's commercially operated boxes. | SEE STORY

The TouchTunes and Sound Leisure partnership officially kicks off here on Oct. 12, the opening day of the London Autumn Coin-Op Show. Soundnet will apply its music programming expertise to the Playdium, a compact jukebox boasting a 23" screen that only requires 13" wall width to mount thanks to its angular back.

Sound Leisure was founded by Alan Black and Edward Moss in 1978, and is now run by Black's two sons who oversee a staff of 110 people. In addition to commercial boxes, which includes the VenueHub, the company is known for its highly engineered replicas based on classic AMi, Seeburg and Wurlitzer designs from the 1940s and '50s. Sound Leisure is reportedly the only manufacturer still producing one-piece wooden cabinets emulating the original construction methods of jukebox classics.

"Being able to partner with Sound Leisure's Chris and Mike Black is a real privilege," said TouchTunes chairman and chief executive Charles Goldstuck. "As we prepare to broadly launch our Playdium smart jukebox across the UK, I am confident that our new partnership will result in a very successful future for both companies."

In a joint statement, Soundnet's Simon Davis and Sound Leisure's Chris Black warned that the UK's jukebox sector is at a difficult crossroads. "Whilst UK consumers are consuming more music than ever, jukebox use is declining," they observed. "The jukebox experience has failed to keep pace with digital music services such as Spotify, iTunes and Apple Music. With Playdium we will be delivering a 21st century experience that will engage consumers in a compelling, relevant way -- and in the process enhance the prospects and profitability of in-venue, pay-to-play music entertainment."

TouchTunes' products are deployed in more than 65,000 bars and restaurants in North America and 75,000 globally. Music is its core product, with millions of songs played daily on its jukebox network. The TouchTunes mobile app has been downloaded more than five million times.
