BLOOMINGTON, MN -- The Minnesota Operators of Music and Amusements held its annual summer conference from June 15 through 17 at Ruttger's Bay Lake Lodge in the Brainerd Lakes area, which is in the northern part of the state.

The conference was well attended by operators from Minnesota, and from the Dakotas. AMOA president Gaines Butler, Metro Distributors (Norcross, GA) -- known familiarly as "The Waffle King" for his feat of coordinating a program under which operators installed modern jukeboxes in Waffle House restaurants across 26 states -- was in attendance, as were many manufacturer representatives.

The pool and dart league coordinators of the Minnesota association's member operating companies met to discuss the recent tournament and to prepare for the next, which is set for January at Canterbury Park in Shakopee. Thousands of individuals and teams from all parts of the state compete weekly in leagues organized and promoted by MOMA members. The association's popular league program maintains a website at momapoolanddarts.com.

STATE PERSPECTIVE: Two-term MOMA president Tom Graham Jr. (l.), Games Unlimited (Milbank, SD), and AMOA president Gaines Butler, Metro Distributors (Norcross, GA), compare notes on the state of the amusement and music industry during Minnesota group's annual summer conference.

MOMA's board meeting was devoted to electing officers for 2017 and reviewing the state's pool and dart tournaments. AMOA president Butler brought the group up to date on industry developments.

The association reelected Tom Graham Jr. of Games Unlimited (Milbank, SD) as its president. Also elected for second terms are vice-president Shawn Dean, Dean Vending (Minneapolis) and secretary Andrew Schmitz, Superior Vending (Vadnais Heights). Chosen as treasurer for 2017 is Terry O'Hara, Midwest Coin Concepts (Waite Park).

MOMA reports that the registrants were honored by the presence of Minnesota native John Kriesel, an Iraq veteran who lost both legs in a roadside bombing. He delivered a powerful motivational speech to the group.

Guests also participated in a medallion hunt in which clues were given every few hours about the location of the hidden medallion. Heidi Newman of Midwest Coin Concepts (Superior, WI) solved the puzzle to find the Maguffin.
