BLOOMINGDALE, IL -- The Illinois Coin Machine Operators Association bestowed its Lifetime Achievement Award on Frank Gumma Sr., founder of American Vending Sales (Elk Grove Village), during its annual meeting here. The award presentation took place at the Hilton Indian Lakes Resort on June 18.

Gumma, who entered the coin machine business in 1956 as a vending route driver and technician, held posts with Rowe Corp. (later Rowe International) and World Wide Distributors before opening his own distribution business, American Vending Sales, in 1971 in Chicago.

Attending the presentation were previous ICMOA Lifetime Achievement Award-winners Don Hesch, A.H. Management Group (Rolling Meadows), and John Neville, Blackhawk Music Co. (Sterling). Neville had been an AVS employee at one stage of his career and, like Hesch, has long been active in ICMOA. They shared fond reminiscences of working with Gumma during a period of profound transformation for the coin-op industries.

"I am flattered to be honored by so many of my respected peers, customers and friends," Gumma said. "It has been a privilege to help this industry grow and achieve so much. I look forward to seeing how far the next generation can take it."

American Vending Sales is a distributor of amusement, gaming and vending equipment. AVS is now run by Frank Gumma's son, Vince.
