SPRINGFIELD, IL -- An Illinois House committee on May 27 voted down a proposed penny-per-ounce tax on sugar-sweetened beverages. The House Revenue and Finance Committee defeated the tax 7-2. Opponents to the measure cited the hardship an extra $2.88 per case of soda would place on working class consumers.

Rep. Robyn Gabel (D-Evanston), who sponsored the legislation, estimated the tax would generate up to $600 million a year and steer people away from drinks linked to obesity and diabetes.
