TRIVANDRUM, India -- According to local press reports, India's Kerala State Horticulture Mission is planning to install seed vending machines here. The state-of-the-art seed dispensers, equipped with touchscreens, will reportedly offer a wide variety of seeds, including lady's finger, cowpea, amaranthus, brinjal, cluster beans, string beans and bitter gourd in mixed or individual packets.

Known as Thiruvananthapuram by native speakers, the city is the capital of the state of Kerala and located India's southwestern coast. Mahatma Gandhi once called it the "Evergreen City of India" and today it's considered one of the "greenest" cities in India. Its population, which includes the wider urban agglomeration, is about 1.68 million.

The Horticulture Mission plans to operate the venders in heavily trafficked locations in Trivandrum, in cooperation with the private sector. The goal, officials said, is to promote vegetable cultivation. | SEE STORY
