BIRMINGHAM, AL -- Bill Smith III will succeed Hatton C.V. Smith as chief executive of coffee roaster Royal Cup Inc., effective July 27. The new chief executive began his career at Royal Cup as a territory manager in Atlanta, overseeing the company's departments and its commercial and office coffee divisions.

Hatton Smith, who has been with Birmingham, AL-based Royal Cup for more than two decades, will continue to direct its national accounts and foodservice business. He served as president of the National Coffee Service Association in 1981, and led a number of major initiatives, including the establishment of the Coffee Development Group with the support of London's International Coffee Organization.

Royal Cup, established in 1896, has been owned and led by the Smith family since 1950 when William E. Smith purchased the company from the estate of the founder, Henry Batterton of the Batterton Coffee Co. Hatton Smith became chief executive in 1995, succeeding his brother, Bill Smith Jr., who now serves as the chairman of the board.
