Candwich' Brings Shelf-Stable Meal To Canned Drink Venders

SALT LAKE CITY -- Mark One Foods is rolling out a line of shelf-stable canned sandwiches that can vend from a standard packaged cold drink machine.

Following a decade of development, company founder Mark Kirkland said his "Candwiches" are set to roll off the production line and hit the market next month in vending machines operated by AVT Inc. in southern California. Kirkland plans to penetrate his local Salt Lake City market with canned sandwiches and then ramp up production in the fall for nationwide distribution.

Each 24-oz. package contains a ready-to-eat sandwich overwrapped with cellophane, or wrapped shelf-stable bread with separate fixings. The initial varieties are peanut butter and jelly with squeeze tubes of the spreads, pepperoni pizza pocket and barbecue chicken. They will vend for $2 to $3. Kirkland plans to add new varieties each month.

The technology used to can the sandwiches is similar to the military's "meals ready-to-eat" supplied to soldiers. The one-year unrefrigerated shelf life is achieved by controlling the amount of oxygen, acidity and water inside the packaging to prevent the growth of pathogens.

In addition to meeting the needs of on-the-go consumers, Kirkland said his shelf-stable sandwiches are already attracting the interest of disaster-relief agencies. Check out Kirkland explaining the Candwich.
