CALGARY, AB, Canada -- Kienna Coffee, a Canadian coffee roaster, is rolling out an adapter for Keurig brewers that enables use of its biodegradable pods in the single-cup machines.

Keurig users pinch the pod to compress its sides and place it inside the KiennaKUP adapter basket and close the lid. They then insert the adapter into the Keurig brewer as they would a K-Cup. The machine's spray nozzle pierces the pod's dome. When the user presses the "brew" button, the machine instantly forces preheated water through the pod, brewing a cup of coffee. The reusable adapter is dishwasher safe and BPA free. | SEE VIDEO

Kienna Coffee has more than 20 varieties of coffee pods, available in 18- or 50-count packs. Among the most popular are donut shop, Colombian, Kona, French vanilla, French roast, hazelnut and Canadian maple. It also markets its own SunCafé pod brewer.

The company also offers coffee under private label in a wide variety of blends, roasts and package types.

Separately, Kienna Coffee announced the appointment of Rod Thorgeirson as director of U.S. sales. Based in Phoenix, he will lead sales and marketing programs for retail and online distribution for the Kienna pod coffee program and its patented KiennaKUP pod adapter for Keurig brewers.

Thorgeirson worked at Kienna in the 1990s before launching his own office coffee service company in Phoenix. He sold his company to Filterfresh and managed the Phoenix operations until its recent acquisition by Aramark.
