ORLANDO, FL -- Six new pieces from LAI Games made their debut at the annual International Association of Amusement Parks & Attractions convention and trade show here. They include three redemption models (one offered in several variants) and three prize merchandisers.

New in the redemption arena are Speed of Light, Pirate Battle and Rainy Days. The first challenges players' reflexes and reaction time with a highly visible array of lights; players must press illuminated buttons in order to win points; scoring and bonus options are programmable by the operator. Appropriately energetic music and lighting effects complement play,

creating what LAI describes as a "fast and frenetic" atmosphere. The action takes place on an eight-foot-high open lattice with a backlit platform, which can serve as an eye-catching centerpiece for the location. At the IAAPA show, LAI hosted a Speed of Light competition for registrants; the winner received a $100 Amazon.com gift card.

Pirate Battle is a ball-toss redemption game designed to appeal to young children. Play and scoring are simple, with different point values assigned to large and small targets. Gameplay culminates in what the manufacturer calls "a five-second frenzy" during which the player can win double points. Game duration, point and ticket options and ticket payouts are programmable.

Two other ball-toss games also were introduced. Princess Castle is designed specifically to please little girls, featuring a pink-and-purple cabinet and a suitable soundtrack. And Choo Choo Train is a ball-toss game with (of course) a railroad theme. All three games can be banked for an attractive presentation attracting the attention of boys and girls alike.

Rainy Days is a water game that requires the player to catch raindrops released by thunderclouds; success is rewarded with tickets. Thunderstorm light and sound effects add to the excitement. An end-of-game bonus round increases the rate of water flow and doubles the points. Water is continually circulated and filtered, so no plumbing is needed for installation.

Also unveiled at the IAAPA show were LAI Games' latest prize merchandisers. Balloon Buster is a carnival-themed game that presents prizes suspended from balloons. The challenge for the player is to guide a pin through a hole in order to pop a balloon and win one of five valuable prizes. The action is simple and fast, and thus encourages repeat play. Carnival-themed graphics and voice messages enhance the balloon-popping experience. The operator can select global or individual prize adjustment settings.

Stacker Wall Street is a novel wall-mounted game, well suited to locations where floorspace is at a premium (bars, hotel lobbies, clubs and the like). It features a vertical LED playfield flanked by four secure prize compartments with autolocking doors, all mounted in a stylish tempered glass and steel cabinet. As with other LAI stackers, this one requires the player to halt laterally moving rows of illuminated squares so they align vertically, starting from the bottom. Lighting and sound effects call attention to the game and add to the pleasure of playing it.

Drop Zone also incorporates an LED playfield that displays animated blocks, but the challenge here is to trap a stack of falling blocks between a pair of "catcher" blocks in much the same manner as the children's pastime of trying to catch a falling ruler between their hands. Blocks fall faster and catchers get smaller as play progresses. Players who reach the "minor prize" level can choose to accept an inexpensive prize, or to try for a major prize. The cabinet is made of durable steel highlighted by dynamic graphics and lighting effects. An optional "win-every-time" cabinet dispenser also is available.

LAI Games USA is a unit of Leisure and Allied Industries, a leader in the interactive entertainment and game industry for more than half a century. The company develops, manufactures and sells its equipment to distributors, operators and entertainment centers around the world.
