OTTAWA, ON, Canada -- Canada is set to unveil what is generally seen as one of the toughest regulations on lead content in consumer products in the world. The goal, said government officials, is to effectively ban lead from toys and other products used by children.

The new regulations limit lead content in toy fashion accessories intended for children under three years of age to 0.009%, down from 0.06%. The government has legal authority to halt importation or sales of products that don't meet these standards.

However, the new lead regulations will likely not impact the sale of products, including toy fashion accessories, intended for children from four to 15 years old. That limit, put into effect five years ago, remains 0.06%.
