<p>PHILADELPHIA -- <a href=Frankford Candy LLC has licensed the Welch's brand for an innovative jelly-filled licorice. The new candy began shipping to vending operators and other retailers nationwide in March.

Welch's Filled Licorice combines a soft licorice outside with a flavorful filling inside. The jelly filling is made with real fruit juice and fruit pectin to deliver genuine fruit flavors. It is available in Concord grape and strawberry flavors in 1.75-oz. vend bags and 3.5-oz. packages.

"Our goal with Welch's was to create a unique, great-tasting product that leverages Welch's brand strength with consumers," said Kurt Dungan, vice-president of marketing for Frankford Candy, which will distribute the new licorice line.

Frankford Candy was founded in Philadelphia in 1947 as a manufacturer of seasonal chocolate products. It began expanding its brand portfolio through licensing partnerships in 1994 and now markets confections under Disney, Nickelodeon, Hello Kitty and Marvel brands.

Lino Marrero, business development manager at Welch's said the filled licorice appeals to a broad audience. "Kids will love the soft, easy to chew texture and the fun jelly filling while adults will appreciate the bolder, real fruit flavors," Marrero said.

Welch's, based in Concord, MA, is the processing and marketing subsidiary of the National Grape Cooperative. Welch's-branded products, ranging from juices to fruit snacks popular in vending, are sold throughout the U.S. and in 50 countries around the globe.
