Venditalia Gets Under Way At Italy's Milan Fairgrounds

MILAN, Italy -- Venditalia 2008 opened its doors here on Wednesday, May 21. The show features some 300 exhibits from around the world, and is expected to attract more than 10,000 national and international trade visitors.

Venditalia is marking its 10th anniversary this year. The show was inaugurated in 1998, and has been held biennially since then. It's sponsored by CONFIDA, Italy's national vending association.

This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the first Italian vending trade show, MIDA, which took place in 1978. A total of 16 MIDA shows were held in the ensuing two decades.

Moderating the press conference that accompanied the opening of Venditalia 2008 was well-known radio show host Filippo Solibello. On hand for the official kickoff were Carlo Cannella, president of the National Research Institute for Foods and Nutrition (INRAN); Renato Borghi, executive vice-president of Confcommercio, Italy's largest representative body for enterprise, with 780,000 members in the trade, tourism, transportation, services and small to medium-sized business sectors. Confida is a member of Confcommercio.

Also attending were Catherine Piana, director-general of the European Vending Association and chief executive officer of the Worldwide Vending Association, and Giacomo Bertolazzi, industrial design area coordinator, IED Milano. The Istituto Europeo di Design is a leading private educational institution for design, fashion and visual arts. Headquartered in Milan, it has campuses in Italy, Spain and Portugal.

Doing the honors for the host region, Lombardy (whose capital is Milan) were  the councillor of trade, fairs and markets, Franco Nicoli Cristiani, and Alessandro Colucci, vice-president of the Board of Assets.
