DALLAS -- AT&T Inc. is aiming to fuel innovation in machine-to-machine communications with a cloud-based "developer sandbox." It says vending is one of the many applications for which the development kit is intended.

The AT&T M2X kit is a combination of two AT&T services for developers to use to manage connected devices and data from device prototype to product launch. The service allows for secure data transmission and sharing, and near-real-time event management.

AT&T Control Center, powered by Jasper Wireless, allows M2M developers to sign up, receive and activate SIMs (subscriber identity modules), and then transmit and collect the data from these SIMs on any connected machine. AT&T Control Center offers a one-stop solution for network provisioning, device activation, customer support, billing options, performance audits and more for connected devices.

One data company is already using AT&T's M2X kit for its palm-size Smart Air Detector, which monitors air quality and emergencies like fire and dangerous carbon monoxide levels. Birdi sends communications to users by smartphone app notification, SMS or phone call.

AT&T's new M2M-focused facility in Plano, TX, prototypes M2M technologies and platforms for business customers to expedite solutions for marketplaces.
