DES MOINES, IA — U-Select-It Inc. recently hosted an on-site training event for members of the National Association of Blind Merchants at USI's corporate headquarters here. It was held in conjunction with NABM's two-day Training for Midwest States conference on September 20-21, which  included state-specific updates, a briefing from the Rehabilitation Services Administration, a discussion on opportunities for Business Enterprise Program vendors in inmate commissaries and a report from the National Council of State Agencies for the Blind.

As a part of the event, the NABM group toured USI's manufacturing facility and received hands-on equipment training on vending machines across USI's comprehensive equipment line. These included ambient snack, cold drink, refrigerated and frozen food combination machines as well as hot beverage merchandisers.

"This training was part of NABM's ongoing effort to ensure that state business enterprises staff and blind entrepreneurs have the latest information to help grow their business," said association president Nicky Gacos, Colorado Associates (Metuchen, NJ). "We truly appreciate the role USI played in the training, and their gracious hospitality."

The training paid particular attention to current applications of technology to the accessibility of vending machines' functional systems, and suggestions on how to further improve ease of access for BEP vendors. In addition, a session on cashless vending was presented by USA Technologies (Malvern, PA) which explored how cashless payment systems can increase revenue for BEP vendors and the BEP program. At the conclusion of the formal on-site training, the company hosted participants at a cookout.

"The opportunity to co-host this event allows USI the ability to hear what is important to this distinguished customer group, especially in terms of accessibility and technology," said USI president of sales Jim Chico. "Our product development roadmap is greatly influenced by this type of event, and we are grateful for chance to participate with such a hands-on organization as the NABM/BEP."
