MIRAMAR BEACH, FL -- This week's Southeast Vending Association (SEVA) convention here was the setting for the release of an announcement by USA Technologies (Malvern, PA) summarizing the initial results of its expanded agreement with Coastal Canteen Vending & Food Services (Charleston, SC).

Under the agreement, USAT is upgrading Coastal Canteen's 1,500 machines to its state-of-the-art cashless platform and telemetry services. This enables the operation to track payments in cash, by credit or debit cards and with such mobile "wallets" as Android Pay and Apple Pay, all through USAT's NFC-capable ePort Connect cashless payment system.

To date, with approximately a third of the deployment completed, Coastal Canteen is reporting cashless usage at 32% of its average machine sales.

Coastal Canteen Vending & Food Service, which was founded in 1953, is one of the largest operations serving Charleston and surrounding cities.

"Throughout our 60-year history, we've built a strong reputation for providing outstanding customer service, and offering the best value through continued hard work and attention to detail," said Coastal Canteen owner Donna Trego. "As more consumers used our machines with the expectation of making a purchase using a credit card or their mobile phone, it was imperative that we met their needs."

Trego said that her company is moving to 100% cashless deployment.

"High cashless usage numbers on large-scale deployments like these perfectly showcase how unattended retailers willing to embrace smart machine technology like ours can quickly benefit," said USAT deployment vice-president Jim Turner. "Implementing telemetry, cashless and NFC-enabled payments not only could lead to more purchases by consumers, but improves business processes and increases efficiencies."

Coastal Canteen is a member of the South Carolina Vending Association and the National Automatic Merchandising Association. It provides full-line vending and office coffee service, as well as self-checkout micromarkets under its "Avenue C" brand.

USA Technologies, which says it owns 78 U.S. and foreign patents, has agreements with Verizon, Visa and Chase Paymentech.
