UNION, NJ -- Smarties Candy Co. is now offering its iconic confection for bulk vending. Specially formulated Smarties, inspired by St. Louis-based S&B Candy & Toy Co., will be available in 23-lb. (11,000-ct.) bulk packaging.

Smarties are fruit-flavored tablet-shaped confections, introduced in the United States by Ce De Candy Inc. in 1949. S&B explained that Smarties supplied in bulk have been formulated to prevent powdering, so it will not cloud the inside surfaces of bulk vender globes.

Smarties are still produced by family-owned Ce De Candy, which is based in Union Township, NJ; it also has a plant in Newmarket, ON, Canada. It was founded in Bloomfield, NJ, by Edward Dee, who began producing candy rolls with one wrapping machine and one tablet presser in a rented factory there. The company is now run by Dee's son, Jonathan. The company says it produces more than 2.5 billion rolls of Smarties candy rolls annually. In addition to Smarties, Ce De Candy produces Mega Smarties, a larger version of the original. It also distributes candy necklaces imported from Holland.

S&B Candy & Toy offers a comprehensive line of bulk confectionery, toys, capsules and flat merchandise as well as plush and other redemption premiums, crane parts and vending machines.

It was reported in the April 2011 issue that S&B Candy and Toy Co. was named the exclusive distributor in the bulk vending channel for Smarties Candy Co., which is now offering special 23-lb. bulk packages of loose tablets (11,000-ct.). S&B is in fact not the exclusive distributor.

Smarties Candy Co. vice-president of sales marketing Eric H. Ostrow told VT: "It was S&B that came up with the challenge for Smarties Candy Co. to develop a hard tablet that would not cloud the glass or pulverize in the mechanism of the globe."

These tablets formulated for bulk vending, however, will be available to all Smarties distributors in the U.S., Ostrow said.
