NEW YORK CITY -- For the second consecutive year, TouchTunes Corp. will be the official sponsor of the U.S. Air Guitar Championships. The celebrated counterculture event will be staged in 20 U.S. cities, at which the company will showcase its digital jukeboxes and promote, which allows patrons to create custom playlists online and access them on location.

To promote myTouchTunes, the company will hold a sweepstakes that will award a trip for two to the National U.S. Air Guitar Finals in San Francisco on August 8. The winner will be randomly chosen from the body of myTouchTunes users in mid-July. The company is running a sweepstakes for its operator partners as well, officials said, which will have the same prize.

TouchTunes noted that the official launch of PlayPorTT, a tablet-style device that offers games and remote selections, will be staged at the San Francisco USAG event.

TouchTunes said it will promote the air guitar events through jukes located in the cities where competitions are being held; these qualifying events began on June 3 and run through the end of the month. The winner of the U.S. Air Guitar Finals will earn a trip to the Air Guitar World Championships, set for Oulu, Finland, in late August.

The event is organized by U.S. Air Guitar, which calls itself the official air guitar association of the United States. Past championships have been covered on network television and CNN and in the Wall Street Journal, and they were featured in an award-winning documentary film, "Air Guitar Nation." Air Guitar is a dance form in which the dancer mimics playing a guitar in synch with musical accompaniment, while performing gymnastic feats.

Last year's national championships took place in New York City, where Andrew Litz, whose stage name is "William Ocean," claimed victory. Litz took top U.S. honors for his trademark routine that climaxes in a beverage-can-crushing backflip. The musical accompaniment was provided by the TouchTunes digital downloading jukebox.

"TouchTunes is all about terrific music, having a great time and providing the best in entertainment," said TouchTunes CMO Ron Greenberg. "There are thousands of fans out there who love the U.S. Air Guitar competitors -- and the music they 'play.' This year, all of the contestants will create their own playlists on myTouchTunes, so anyone in one of the thousands of  myTouchTunes locations nationwide can see what's hot and play these great songs, whether they're at the event or not. Plus, myTouchTunes members get a chance to win a trip to the finals in San Francisco."
