Tetris Enlivens 35th Anniversary With New Logo, Merchandise Lines

Created in 1984 in the former Soviet Union by Alexey Pajitnov using an Electronika-60 computer, Tetris became a worldwide hit as an early game for the 8-bit Commodore 64 and 16-bit IBM desktop computers. Today, the game boasts more than 500 million downloads to mobile devices and hundreds of millions additional instances on more than 50 platforms in 200 nations around the world. Sixty-plus licensees and promotional partners from all parts of the globe now offer Tetris-branded games, lifestyle products and experiences, including apparel, toys, novelties and decor items.

The Tetris brand commemorates its annual milestone every June 6, known by fans worldwide as World Tetris Day. Speaking at this year’s ceremonies was Maya Rogers, president and chief executive of the brand’s sole agent, Blue Planet Software.

“It’s been 35 years since Tetris first debuted, and just like the game’s colorful Tetriminos and Line Clearing gameplay, what remains the same is that people simply love Tetris,” Rogers explained, “Today, Tetris is as popular as ever among fans worldwide, and we’re thrilled to share this monumental moment with them.”

The new logo, revealed on June 6, is designed to convey a fresh, contemporary and dynamic look for the brand while honoring the core look for which the brand is recognized globally. New Tetris-branded games, products and partnerships making their debut on this year’s World Tetris Day include a special Tetris game designed in collaboration with Sanrio, the celebrated Japanese creator of Hello Kitty and other popular characters, many of whom appear in the game. Also rolling out on World Tetris Day 2019 were a new full-size arcade from AtGames Digital Media Inc. as well as mini arcade systems from Super Impulse. Red Bull Mind Gamers and Tetris, which partnered earlier this year in a special contest for game developers, will reveal their next collaboration in coming weeks. New licensed merchandise includes “fashion forward” apparel and beauty products from ipsy, Sock It to Me, KangaCare, Peacebird and GXG.

Tetris, of course, is well-known to arcade videogame enthusiasts. Joining in the celebration of this year’s World Tetris Day is the Barcade chain of taverns featuring classic arcade games and American craft beers. “Tetris takeovers” were staged at all Barcade locations across the country. On Saturday, June 8, Barcades in New York City’s Brooklyn and Manhattan as well as Jersey City and Newark, NJ; Los Angeles, CA; New Haven, CT; Philadelphia., PA; and Detroit, MI featured Tetris signage, Tetris-themed food and drink specials.
