NORWOOD, MA -- Crane Merchandising Systems reports that a micromarket application-programming interface for its Streamware VendMax vending management system is rolling out commercially. The company had announced a pilot deployment of the software last year.

The purpose of the API is to allow VendMax vending operator customers who also run micromarkets to integrate the information supplied by their self-checkout markets with the data being collected from vending machines. As a result, VendMax can deliver a consolidated view of sales and warehouse inventory without the need to enter data twice.

According to Crane, VendMax now automatically accounts for the movement of inventory into and out of micromarkets, and updates the necessary records so inventory does not need manual adjustment. Inventory is updated at a near-real time pace based on driver activity, rather than periodically when manual adjustments are made. This is designed to provide more reliable warehouse inventory reporting in real time.

An added benefit is the enhanced efficiency from working in one system, Crane added. Operators no longer need to enter products, barcodes and prices into two separate systems. Rather, VendMax stores all this data and sends micromarket terminals in the field the information they require, while receiving sales and driver activity reports from the kiosks.

Crane explained that, from inside VendMax, the managing of micromarkets will be similar to that of machines. Users will be able to update planograms and access revenue and performance data, all in one place. VendMax reports now contain vending, product delivery and micromarket sales to give management a complete streamlined view of revenue and gross margins when running both vending machines and micromarkets.

"VendMax's micromarket integration API provides us incredible value," said Don Diffendal, vice-president of Laurel Foodsystems (Pittsburgh). "Prior to implementing it, we used to spend about four hours a week manually managing inventories across the 29 markets we have. Now, that time requirement has been completely eliminated and we can spend it elsewhere.

"Also, if there is a conversion from vending to a micromarket, with this API I can now compare same-account sales and evaluate my overall business performance year over year, with the consolidated revenue reporting feature."

The API was developed by Streamware with input from multiple customers and micromarket providers. It can integrate with any standard or custom micromarket software to improve inventory control, consolidate revenue, and streamline operating processes, Crane observed.

"We are very excited to offer this API to the industry," said Streamware product manager Silpa Pande "With the influx of micromarket installations, it really does offer operators the best of both worlds in terms of operation management.

"During our field trial, our customers saw tremendous improvements in efficiency, inventory management, and time-savings as a direct result of this integration," Pande continued. "In light of the changing needs of our customers, we are glad we can provide something that will make their lives easier and deliver value to their businesses."
