Smith Will Succeed Cooper As Firestone's Financial EVP, COO In 2019

NEEDHAM, MA -- Firestone Financial has announced that executive vice-president and chief operating officer Scott Cooper will step down from these posts in May, 2019. He will be succeeded by Michael Smith, presently senior vice-president, portfolio risk management, effective March 1, 2019. Cooper will remain as chief operating officer in residence, working closely with Smith during the transition.

A 30-year veteran of Firestone,  Cooper joined the company in 1989 as assistant controller after serving for six years as a CPA at the public accounting firm Arthur Andersen. He held various roles at Firestone and was later appointed senior vice-president, chief financial officer. In 2015, after assisting Firestone chief executive David Cohen in leading Firestone's acquisition by Berkshire Bank, Cooper assumed the role of executive vice-president, chief operating officer. He has been a member of Firestone's board of directors for more than two decades, and has held board positions with various nonprofits.

"Scott and I have worked together to build Firestone for the last 30 years," Cohen recalled.. "In this time, we've seen loan volume grow by nine times and employee head count has more than doubled. This is due in no small part to Scott's vision and leadership.

"In looking forward, we couldn't think of a better person to assume Scott's responsibilities than Mike Smith," Cohen continued. "Scott and Mike are working closely to ensure a seamless transition and that Firestone is positioned for continued growth and success."

Michael Smith has been with Firestone Financial for 11 years. He was retained to lead key operational areas as vice-president, credit, operations, and risk management. In 2015, Smith, an attorney, was appointed senior vice-president, portfolio risk officer; he leads the credit, risk, loan operations and portfolio management teams. He has more than 30 years of finance and lending experience, having previously served as director of operations and legal counsel for Agfa Corp's AGFA Financial Services Inc. (Wilmington, MA).
