ShelfX Vending Fridge

BOULDER, CO -- Vending Fridge from ShelfX features a "smart shelf" equipped with sensitive scales that know the exact quantity and and identity of products stocked on it. The new vending system also knows what customers remove or return to the shelf, adjusting accordingly before processing the payment. Through wireless communication, the Vending Fridge updates a customer's account and bills automatically.

The novel approach to unattended merchandising received a silver iSpot Innovation Award at last week's NAMA OneShow in Las Vegas, where ShelfX, a provider of self-checkout and inventory management solutions, introduced it.

Vending Fridge customers begin by downloading the ShelfX app onto their mobile phones to create an account. They point their phones at the Vending Fridge to scan a QR code that unlocks the door of the refrigerated merchandiser, allowing access to foods and beverages inside. Customers can also use an RFID-enabled XCard functions the same as the app.

The operator stocks and maintains the machine, while ShelfX handles customer accounts and payment processing; it sends the operator the monthly revenue, minus a percentage of sales to off set the cost of the service.

ShelfX is targeting Vending Fridge at hotels, retail stores, gyms, schools and libraries in need of flexible food vending solutions. It's ideal for items like sandwiches, salads and fresh fruits. The price is $599, or $299 for a retrofit kit.

ShelfX's new vending system is based on its existing self-checkout retail platform used by grocers, sports stadiums, pharmacies and airport kiosks, among other venues.
