BERLIN, Germany -- Sega Amusements International Ltd. unveiled a major upgrade to its popular Sonic Basketball arcade game at the Euro Attractions Show, held by the International Association of Amusement Parks & Attractions in the Messe Berlin exhibition center here. The game now features reactive lighting effects to make scoring "even more gratifying," the manufacturer explained.

The Sega Sonic sports-themed arcade game line dates back to 2009, and Sega Sonic Basketball received a brand update five years ago. The newest version retains the original dimensions: 98" (249 cm.) D. x 41" (104 cm.) W. x  104" (264 cm.) H.

Sega added that operators in the United States will be pleased by the availability of an optional banknote validator on Sonic Basketball, to enhance player convenience.

"Five years ago, Sonic-branded basketball brought a whole new lease of life to this game category, where the typical look was quite dated and very similar across all manufacturers," said Sega general manager Justin Burke. "Our fresh blue-and-white Sonic All-stars version changed all that, and with our iconic mascot Sonic the Hedgehog at the heart of the design, income was noticeably higher than standard units. So we felt it was time to give Sonic Basketball a major boost, to keep it at the top of the league of basketball games."

U.S. sales manager Vince Moreno added that "the brand-new dazzling lights take the look of Sonic Basketball to a whole new level. As well as attracting players' attention with bright blue LED lighting, the game also produces a quick pulse-like effect when a player scores." The flashing effect, combined with cheering audio, delivers a "satisfying feeling" every time the player scores, he said.

"Players will also love the moving hoop with rushing music that makes the game both fun and challenging," Moreno summed up. "And because the game is best enjoyed with friends or family, we designed it to link up to 15 cabinets."

In addition to Sonic Basketball, Sega's Sonic branded games include Sonic Air Hockey and Sonic Baby Air Hockey (narrower and shorter, just for kids); the Sonic Dash Extreme video redemption game; and Sonic Blast Ball, a mechanical redemption piece. The current Sonic television series, reinforced by a wide variety of consumer games on various platforms, all help players re-engage with Sonic games in arcades.

The new Sega Sonic Basketball model can be preordered from Sega authorized distributors, or by calling Sega at (847) 364-9787 [in Europe, +44 (0) 208-391- 8090]. Sega also may be contacted by email at sales@segaarcade.com
