SAN JOSE, CA -- PayPal's Venmo payment app is increasingly popular among millennials as a way to split a restaurant bill or rent with a friend. And now users of the service can make online purchases from more than two million retailers.

The move positions Venmo, a service that connects to bank accounts and cards, closer to being more of a full-fledged mobile wallet for a broad range of transactions.

Venmo users can now use their app balance or linked cards and bank account to shop on the mobile sites of any retailers accepting PayPal payments. The initial list of stores includes Foot Locker and Forever 21.

They can also split the cost of online purchases with friends and share payments on the Venmo feed.

To pay with Venmo, when shopping on a mobile website run by a participating retailer, users have to select the option to pay via PayPal. That brings them into a separate screen where they can select their Venmo account to complete the transaction.

Paypal introduced the ability to pay select businesses with Venmo early last year.
