NEXCOM And USAT Launch Cashless Payment Pilot On Navy Bases

MALVERN, PA -- USA Technologies Inc. and the Navy Exchange Service Command are testing cashless payment acceptance at vending machines at Navy exchanges on select U.S. Navy bases.

NEXCOM will install USAT's ePort NFC enabled cashless payment technology in 200 machines and use the Malvern, PA, company's ePort Connect service for the pilot.

"NEXCOM operates approximately 11,000 combined contracted and direct-run vending machines on U.S. Naval bases across the country," said Gerard Fantano, NEXCOM's vending branch manager. "To date, only a small number of contracted beverage machines have incorporated cashless options for our customers."

He said NEXCOM is piloting the expansion on Navy-owned and operated machines to evaluate the economic benefits and customer acceptance, given the growing industrywide trend toward increased usage of cashless options.

During the pilot test period with USAT, Fantano said NEXCOM's goal is to learn about the benefits of cashless in its initial deployment and, subject to profitability, to possibly expand to selected machines nationwide.

USAT vice-president of sales and business development Mike Lawlor said cashless usage in other military installations USAT serves continues to be well above average. Its most recent analysis, for the three-month period between January and March 2013, showed cashless as a percent of total sales averaged 46% for the military channel (non-Navy) compared to an overall average of 32%.
