NEW YORK CITY -- The National Coffee Association of USA will hold its 97th Annual Convention on March 6-8 at The Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort and Club in Aventura, FL. Official host of the event is the Starbucks Coffee Co.; its chief operating officer, Martin Coles, will deliver the keynote address.

In 2008, the convention will host two fundraising events: the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) Breakfast and the International Women's Coffee Alliance (IWCA) Luncheon. These spotlight coffee's diverse constituency and introduce a larger audience to the work of the two organizations, which work to foster long-term industry health and growth by assuring sustainable production of quality coffee by prosperous, equitable communities.

A series of breakfast roundtables will enable participants from all sectors of the industry to discuss topics of mutual interest, ranging from the potential value of registering geographic indicators in intellectual property through how retailers differentiate their brands in today's crowded marketplace, to building demand for sustainability.

Educational sessions will address a wide range of subjects. A program led by Karl Schmidt, Probat Burns, will explore reducing the environmental impact of coffee roasting; Chris Burger, Fres-co System USA, will chair a discussion of packaging trends and innovations; and Bunn-O-Matic Corp.'s Margaret Heery will review the significance of the "espresso explosion."

Other sessions include "drink on demand" technology; regional roaster issues; a cupping workshop; tea as a profit center for coffee; and a preview of the 2008 National Coffee Drinking Trends study.

For the fourth year running, NCA will host a Table-Top Exhibition at the Convention. Registration is available online at, or by phone at (212) 766-4007. Sponsorships and table-top exhibits are also available on a first-come, first-served basis by contacting Leecia Manning or Jeff Kendrick (sponsorships) and Gerri Buchanan (table-top exhibits) at NCA at (212) 766-4007.
