WASHINGTON -- National Automatic Merchandising Association senior staff members recently visited the nation's capital to meet with elected officials and public policy organizations. Discussions centered on current issues of concern to the vending industry.

The NAMA delegation included president and chief executive Carla Balakgie, executive vice-president and chief operating officer Dan Mathews, government affairs senior vice-president Eric Dell and vice-president, marketing vice-president Roni Moore.

Activities included meetings with Sen. John Boozman (R-AK) and Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-SC), a nutrition organization and NAMA board member Sylvia B. Rowe, SR Strategy (Washington), former president and chief executive of the International Food Information Council. "It was a productive series of meetings that will directly benefit the association on a number of levels," said Dell.

A principal objective of the trip was to determine the elements of this year's NAMA Public Policy Conference, scheduled for October.

"These discussions are an important part of our national advocacy effort and reinforce the work we are performing at the state and local level," Dell explained. "It's critical for our lawmakers to know us and more important, know our members' issues, as they make decisions that could potentially have a significant impact.

"While it's true that currently most of the challenges we face nationally involve pending regulations -- for example, product labeling -- we need to ensure that our voice is heard as part of the process," Dell emphasized. "It's a big benefit for our industry that Carla Balakgie has experience in DC and is a highly respected presence on the Hill."
