More Smartphone Users Stream Songs; Almost All Mobile Listeners Tune In On Their Devices

A new study released by eMarketer estimates that one in five Americans will listen to music on their mobile phones by the end of this year. While that may not be a surprising statistic when one considers the widespread use of smartphones, eMarketer also predicts that "double-digit growth is expected to continue through 2015, when well over a third of all mobile phone users will participate."

Included in this figure are mobile phone users who listen to streaming music on Pandora, Spotify and other digital radio stations, along with those who download music directly onto their phones from the iTunes Store or similar services. EMarketer said its forecast does not include listeners who only sideload music from their PCs to their phones.

The "note" says, "CAGR (2011-2017)=23.2%; mobile phone users of any age who listen to music on mobile phones via direct download or live stream at least once per month; excludes sideloaded music, ringtones and ringback tones."

EMarketer said the inclusion of downloads to mobile means the figures are not directly comparable to its estimate of digital radio listeners, which includes listeners to digital broadcasts of terrestrial radio stations, digital-only stations or podcasts. The researcher estimates that 147 million Internet users will listen to such content at least monthly this year, or roughly six in 10 Internet users. Next year, participation will approach half of the overall population.

The study concluded that nearly half of all digital radio listeners will likely listen to streaming music on their mobile phones, and that smartphone music listeners will account for 99.2% of all mobile phone music listeners this year.
