LANSING, MI -- More than 70 members of Michigan Distributors & Vendors Association gathered here to meet with their elected officials, present MDVA candy boxes and host the association's annual Legislative Luncheon.

MDVA Day in mid-May at the Michigan State Capitol was keynoted by Gov. Rick Snyder, who described Michigan as "the nation's comeback state" because such economic indicators as falling unemployment rates and an increase in manufacturing jobs have returned a sense of optimism to state government. The governor asked MDVA members to carry that optimism back to their communities.

As Gov. Snyder entered the room to give his address, he gave a "thumbs up" to the association's "healthy vending solutions" display. Healthy choices are part of the governor's statewide health initiatives.

Also addressing the MDVA group were Reps. Frank Foster (R-Pellston) and Andrew Kandrevas (D-Southgate), and Speaker of the House James (Jase) Bolger (R-Marshall). Kandrevas urged members to become more involved politically; "attend the 'coffee hours' held by your representative in your district," he urged. Bolger spoke about the willingness to work together to support MDVA's legislative agenda such as SB 930. The Senate bill tackles a number of tobacco tax enforcement matters.

After the presentations by the governor and legislative leaders, association members walked up to the Capitol to deliver the MDVA candy boxes to members of the House and Senate. At noon, more than 60 members of the Legislature joined MDVA wholesalers and vendors at an informal buffet lunch.

MDVA is a NAMA affiliated state council. Information on its activities may be had from NAMA's Pam Gilbert.
