CICERO, IL -- Melitta USA said it has selected LBP's UpShot Solution as the vehicle for its entry into the single-serve fresh-brew coffee market. LBP designed the "eco-friendly" single-serve filter for compatibility with the popular Keurig brewer and similar equipment. Melitta will purchase the filters from LBP and fill them with its famous branded coffees.

Under the terms of the agreement, Melitta will install the necessary equipment at its roasting plant in Cherry Hill, NJ, by year-end to offer its customer base a range of roasting, filling and packaging services using LBP's UpShot filter technology.

The UpShot filter features a proprietary mesh formulated to enhance the sensory appeal of the brewing process. Consumers can see and smell the coffee or tea from the moment they open the Fresh Seal outer package. The filter is made of 100% recyclable polypropylene; the Fresh Seal overwrap can be made with recyclable materials.

Chris Hillman, vice-president of marketing at Melitta said LBP's UpShot Solution was the best-suited single-cup solution for its branded and private-label products. "We are able to offer our customers a very flexible business model so that they too can enter the single-serve coffee category," he added.

Melitta was founded in 1908 by Melitta Bentz, after receiving a patent for her two-part coffee filtering system consisting of a filter basket and filtration paper. The filter system was the first to successfully remove coffee residue in the brewing process, revolutionizing the way coffee was brewed. Melitta USA produces coffee and filters in North America, and markets the line in the U.S. The company, part of Germany's privately held Melitta Group, is headquartered in Clearwater, FL.

Chicago-based LBP Manufacturing Inc. has been developing sustainable, on-the-go packaging for more than two decades. Its hot beverage solutions include the Coffee Clutch hot cup sleeve, Beverage on the Move insulated takeout beverage carrier and Thermo Grip double-wall hot cups. The company is a recipient of the Starbucks "2012 Supplier of the Year" award.
