COLOGNE, Germany -- The Koelnmesse Supervisory Board has appointed Katharina C. Hamma to the post of chief operating officer, effective Oct. 1. She comes to the venerable trade show organizer and host from Messe München (Munich, Germany), where she had been an authorized officer.

Chief operating officer is one of the three top management positions at Koelnmesse, Germany's largest organizer of trade shows. Gerald Böse serves as chief executive and Herbert Marner is chief financial officer. Hamma's appointment completes a comprehensive reorganization of the company's top management team, formerly consisting of five executives.

Hamma studied business management and clothing technology, and holds a degree in engineering. She joined Messe München in 1997, and has headed its business unit responsible for investment goods trade fairs since 2005.

Koelnmesse explained that the creation of the chief operating officer position consolidates the operational responsibility for all of the company's trade shows and puts it into the hands of one individual.

Cologne's fairground for trade shows was constructed in 1922 as one of the initiatives of Mayor Konrad Adenauer, who became famous as the leader of the postwar German Federal Republic and an architect of the European Union. Koelnmesse moved into its current exhibit facilities in 2005. It hosts more than 70 trade shows, including the giant Anuga food and beverage exposition, the German vending industry's Eu'Vend fair, the gamescom interactive amusements exhibition and ISM, said to be the world's largest confectionery trade fair.
