CHICAGO - Sammy USA reports strong sales for a comprehensive conversion kit of "Faster Than Speed," priced under $3,000 to the operator, which is specially designed to convert six earlier titles from other manufacturers to Sammy's "AtomisWave" system. The resulting game will be able to support all "AtomisWave" software, of which there is already a considerable library, with more to come. The kit includes new hardware, new cartridge-based software, graphics and a new standard monitor. (Editor's note: "AtomisWave" supports standard or hi-res monitors but not medium-res monitors.) The convertible older games are Midway's "Cruisin' USA," "Cruisin' World" and "Off Road Thunder," Atari's "California Speed" and "Rush the Rock" and Namco's "Ridge Racer 5." Sammy executives said the kit's competitive price is further offset by the operator's ability to sell some of these boards for $200 to $500, along with the ability to reuse the old monitor elsewhere. Sammy has succeeded with a long string of kits in the video market, most recently "Extreme Hunting."
