James Rost Dies At 87; Led NAMA As 1986 Chairman, Then President

James Rost

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL - James Rost, an experienced vending industry executive who led the National Automatic Merchandising Association for more than a decade, died here on July 22. He was 87.

Rost, who became a certified public accountant after serving as an officer in the U.S. Air Force, began his vending career with ARA Services (Philadelphia, PA). He then served with Interstate United Corp. (Chicago, IL) and became executive vice-president of Canteen Corp. after Canteen's then-parent company, Trans World Services, acquired IUC.

Rost was elected to the NAMA board of directors in 1980 and became board chairman in 1986. He was chosen as president and chief executive in 1988, succeeding the late G. Richard Schreiber in that post. Rost retired in 1998.

He was active in numerous business and civic organizations and served on the Advisory Council for the Marquette University School of Business.

Rost is survived by his wife Rita; children Alice Kecseg, Philip Rost, Jeanette (Jenny) Staiger and John Rost; grandchildren Patrick O'Neill, Amy O'Neill, Marina Staiger and Jack Staiger; step-grandchildren Jillian

Kecseg, Matthew Kecseg and Paige Brudniak; step great-grandchild Emily Kecseg; sisters Jean Schenck and Elizabeth Ness; his friend Judy Gilpin; and sons-in-law Kevin O'Neill and William Staiger.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 9 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Glueckert Funeral Home Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Rd., (4 blocks south of Palatine Rd.) Arlington Heights, IL 60004. A Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, Aug. 10 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Park Foundation, 1110 Vermont Ave., NW, Suite 200, Washington, DC, or a charity of the donor's choice.
