SEARCH TERM LONDON -- Family entertainment center expert Michael Getlan again will conduct his Redemption Master Class in conjunction with the European Amusement and Gaming (EAG) International Expo at the Exhibition Centre London (ExCeL) in this city's historic Docklands area. The two-day course will be presented on Jan. 22 and 23; the show runs through the 24.

Getlan, returning to the EAG education program by popular demand, is a third-generation FEC operator, consultant and provider of management services. His flagship operation is FunFuzion, a 125,000-sq.ft. fun center in New Rochelle, NY's New Roc City complex. His company owns and operates amusement centers of all sizes across the United States, and provides business development and management services to independent operators through Amusement Consultants Ltd. and Smiles Amusement Co. LLC.

The first day of this year's Redemption Master Class will discuss a variety of questions often confronted by operators new to the redemption business. These include:

» How do I make more money with my ticket redemption equipment? Seminar-goers will gain insights into procuring the right equipment, methods for "percentaging" machines and the basics of equipment operation.

» How do I make more money with my prize center? This discussion will address such matters as selection and display of prize merchandise, the layout of the facility within the location, lighting, price labeling, demographic targeting, identifying prize categories, and efficient purchasing.

On the second day, topics will include:

» How do I make more money with my merchandise dispensing equipment? Answers here include evaluating and choosing appropriate technology, implementing effective systems, and comprehending the role of receipts and such alternatives as tokens and smart cards.

Getlan will emphasize that "happy staff makes happy guests" in a master class on management and training. It will include recommendations for training and motivating personnel, with role-playing exercises.

The Michael Getlan classes are open to all EAG International participants. "It's not just for the bosses," the presenter emphasized. "These sessions work better when staff at all levels attend."

He added that he has enjoyed all the EAG Expos in which he has taken part. "I love working with British operators and find them very positive and receptive to new ideas. This mindset is very important as during the sessions we will all have a part to play in creating the right environment for the sharing of knowledge," Getlan said. "Anyone operating redemption equipment or responsible for people operating redemption will benefit from attending, and it should be great fun.

"We're all fortunate to be working in an industry where the goal is to make people happy," the industry pioneer concluded.

EAG is sponsored by the British Amusement Catering Trade Association (BACTA) and administered by Swan Events Ltd., both headquartered in London. Information, advice on travel and lodgings, and online visitor registration may be found at eagexpo.com.
