WASHINGTON – The nation's capital will allow the sale of food and drinks on Metrorail property anywhere outside the areas of the train system that riders must pay to access. This includes allowing vending machines on train station platforms.
Since the sale of food and drinks by new vendors can impact local businesses, officials said Metro staff will inform any impacted jurisdiction before a permit is approved. Local jurisdictions will also be notified every three months of any projects in the pipeline, to allow time for the local government to express any concerns.
Some commercial or other uses of Metro property could still be approved more quickly than that in unique circumstances, officials said.
