TIANJIN, CHINA -- Coca-Cola Co. unveiled a vending machine in China that allows consumers to return their used packaging and rewards them for doing so by using facial recognition technology.

Called VenCycling, the machine also has a voice interactive system and it is designed to make purchasing and recycling a variety of Coca-Cola beverages more efficient and intelligent, according to officials.

The machine sports emotive AI LEDs and two "eyes" -- one that dispenses beverages and another that collects used packaging. In exchange for returning used cans or plastic bottles into the machine, consumers receive credits, primarily via mobile devices, for beverages or products made from recycled plastics.

The VenCycling machine support Coca-Cola's "World Without Waste" vision to help collect and recycle the equivalent of 100% of its packaging by 2030.

Coke unveiled the machine at the "Shaping a World Without Waste through Innovation" event during the World Economic Forum's annual meeting, also known as Summer Davos.

"We envision a system that allows vending machines to also collect used packaging. It will help enhance recycling awareness among consumers and nurture recycling habits," said vice-president of research and development at Coca-Cola Asia Pacific, Shell Huang.

"VenCycling is an innovation for the company to achieve our global vision for sustainable packaging," added Jiantao Zhang vice-president, Coca-Cola Greater China and Korea. "We will use our business efficiency to contribute to sustainable development in China."
